The educative program Performing Arts for the Future is a project of 7 workshops for young artists and students from all over Europe. The inspiring idea is to create conditions for meeting emerging artists with legends of new theater. All participants of the workshops have free entry for the festival productions and they form the core of the festival. Participants are actively involved into the festival events and build contacts for future cooperation. Last year, they managed to arrange a very close cooperation between them and the Hungarian group: The Bladder Circus Company.

This year these great artists as workshop leaders were invited. Matěj Matějka from The Grotowski Institute in Wroclaw, German dancer Juschka Weigel and butoh performer Sabine Seume who studied under the direction of Pina Bausch. Bartlomiej Ostapczuk, a representant of the Polish Mime Centrum in Warsaw, Ferenc Fehér and Réka Szabo from Hungary. After an excellent experience and great satisfaction of the participants from previous years, Radim Vizváry from Tantehorse will also be a leader of one of the workshops.

Last day of the festival, the participants will have an opportunity to present their work at the Forman brother’s boat Tajemství.

GENERAL CALL 2012
we invite you to take part in the

5th INTERNATIONAL THERMAIKOS 2min FILM FESTIVAL 2012
Lights on!*

SPECIAL CALL 2012

Thermaikos Film Festival/Thessaloniki 1912 – 2012

“A film for Thessaloniki: in light and darkness”

The historical context

2012 marks the centenary of its liberation of Thessaloniki City from the Ottomans. In 1912, Thessaloniki was incorporated into the Greek State. A new period in its long history was thus inaugurated. The physiognomy of the city changed radically, large waves of refugees and economic migrants settled, other populations were expelled and the urban landscape was entirely transformed.

The city is preparing to celebrate this anniversary of liberation, facing plenty of challenges for its future development and approaching the shocking historical events of the last 100 years through a new lens.

Special call – concept

On the occasion of this centenary, we invite you to join us in this celebration by creating a film up to 2 minutes about our city of Thessaloniki. The general concept – which bears an affinity to this year’s Festival slogan “Lights on” – is “Thessaloniki in light and darkness”. The concept framework leaves plenty of room for artistic freedom, interpretation and expression. We will be glad and proud to receive films about Thessaloniki (with their own unique title) according to the general regulation of the Festival.

All the films will be screened at a special tribute section of the 5th Thermaikos Film Festival. A special prize will be awarded to the best film.

October 9, 2012

Deadline for Paper and Demo Submissions:
*** July 6, 2012 ***

======================

We are delighted to announce the 1st International Workshop on Musical Metacreation (MUME2012) to be held October 9, 2012, in conjunction with the Eighth AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Interactive Digital Entertainment (AIIDE’12).

Thanks to continued progress in artistic and scientific research, a new possibility is emerging in our musical relationship with technology: Generative Music or Musical Metacreation, the design and use of computer music systems which are “creative on their own”. Metacreation involves using tools and techniques from artificial intelligence, artificial life, and machine learning, themselves often inspired by cognitive and life sciences. Musical Metacreation suggests exciting new opportunities to enter creative music making: discovery and exploration of novel musical styles and content, collaboration between human performers and creative software “partners”, and design of systems in gaming and entertainment that dynamically generate or modify music.

The workshop will bring together artists, practitioners and researchers interested in developing software and systems that autonomously (or interactively) recognize, learn, represent, complete, accompany, compose or interpret music. In particular, emphasis will be put on systems with real-time aspects, since these are relevant to both art and entertainment communities.

Topics
======

We encourage paper and demo submissions on topics including the following:
* Novel representations of musical information
* Systems for autonomous or interactive music composition
* Systems for automatic generation of expressive musical interpretation
* Systems for learning or modelling music style and structure
* Systems for intelligently remixing or recombining musical material
* Advances or applications of AI, machine learning, and statistical techniques for musical purposes
* Advances or applications of evolutionary computing or agent and multiagent-based systems for musical purposes
* Computational models of human musical creativity
* Techniques and systems for supporting human musical creativity
* Online musical systems (i.e. systems with a real-time element)
* Adaptive music in video games
* Methodologies for, and studies reporting on, evaluation of musical metacreations
* Emerging musical styles and approaches to music production and performance involving the use of AI systems

Format and Submissions
======================

The workshop will be a one day event including:
* Presentations of TECHNICAL PAPERS
* Presentations of POSITION PAPERS relevant to Musical Metacreation and its future
* Presentations of DEMONSTRATIONS
* One or more PANEL SESSIONS (potential topics include international collaborations, evaluation methodologies, industry engagement, generative music in art vs. games)

For complete details on attendance, submissions and formatting, please visit the workshop website:

2012 Award Theme

The contemporary media milieu would suggest an evolving devolution of the traditional notion of the “society of control”. The boundaries of enclosures and spaces are no longer the rigid and defined perimeters they once were. The browser, the mobile camera/screen are new enabling simulations the user canexploit to navigate alternative pathways, to experience new modes of expression and to participate in global cultural exchange.

This is reflected online and on the street. In our political discourse and our social interactions. And it is most visible when repatriated via the mainstream media and traditional news editorials coupled with wild proclamations of “new freedoms” accompanied by “real change”.

Yet what has reallychanged? What do these new counter measures look like on the ground? Where do the subversions play out? What new questions are we asking of our environment and of ourselves?

In the same evolving moment new far less visible forms of control are emerging that use these very same technological platforms: surveillance networks, social media, data mining algorithms, privacy interventions, sophisticated image gathering techniques and drone technologies. These aggregators of data and network traffic are rapidly translating our private, public and social lives into valuable sets of relational data – re-writing the notion of identity, weaving new paradigms of control.

The Call Out

SCREENGRAB is now entering its fourth year with an international call out for the AUS$5000 New Media Arts Prize and the companion exhibition in August 2012 for short listed applicants. We invite digital practitioners working in screen based media to submit works on the theme of CONTROL.

All forms of screen based media are encouraged including multi-channel video, digital illustration, audio sculpture, photography, generative media, 2D & 3D animation.

International Festival of Post-Digital Culture
Innovation, Creativity and Forward Thinking

“Unfinity”
We live in a unique moment in history, between two rapidly changing worlds. One is the world of decaying political and economic structures and the other is the world of an infinite explosion in technology and information. There are conflicting mindsets in every part of our culture: the contradiction between ubiquitous virtual presence and physical presence creating an identity crisis; the non-hierarchical, organic web structure clashing with hierarchical, non-organic real-world structures; the myth of the individual as a genius vs the power of the crowd and the collaborative practice; the passive and observant attitude set against active participation and co-creation. These opposing forces are placing us in a paradoxical state that we have named Unfinity.

Unfinity is a pull between these poles, a hybrid space. It’s timeless and uncertain. We believe that to ease the state of Unfinity in a human and meaningful way it is crucial to be creative, to experiment, to challenge and take action.

Alpha-ville 2012 invites artists, designers, thinkers, digital and non-digital people to consider, participate in, create and express what will be the next steps for building an alternative future that, we hope, will belong to the people.

Deadline: 6 June 2012

Share Prize 2012 – Open Your City

Piemonte Share is announcing a new edition of the Share Prize, the international competition designed to discover, promote and support art in the digital age.

Entries for the Share Prize can be submitted from 23th March to 6th June 2012, by completing the entry form on the website www.toshare.it

The Share Prize this year will focus on the theme for the 8th Share Festival, entitled Open Your City.

Open Your City is the guiding theme for the Share Festival 2012. A theme that contains three key, simple and direct words, the pillars on which this year’s festival programme will be built. ‘Open Your City’ will also provide the blueprint for this year’s Share Prize.

Open is meant in the sense of being in the making, of being unfinished, experimental, transparent and boundless. ‘Open’ gives the idea of a starting point, the perspective from which we see things, an inclusive vision founded on digital communication and active democracy. It is a hallmark of the quality of an idea, a system, a group or an organization. It relinquishes copyright to give precedence to the sharing of knowledge, to open-source methodologies.

Your is meant as the direct participation of people who possess, own, use, occupy and command something that belongs to them. It identifies the person who plays a leading role in driving change-someone who takes action, steps in and gets involved; someone who makes plans, collaborates, transforms, brings together and acts as part of a community. ‘Your’ means grass-roots democracy.

City is meant as the venue or theatre of action; it is the common good, the backdrop to changes underway. An urban space abuzz with social and technological ferment, made up of streets and roads, squares and parks and everyday locations. The city has become populated with new sites of social media where communication flows thick and fast-in the form of control, through video surveillance or the mapping of social graphs, though also in the form of participatory democracy, through augmented reality, smart architectures and wearable computing.

What is the role of art today, in this time of social transformation towards the city of the future?
Is this the city that we want, that we imagine, that we wish for?

What’s your idea of the open city?

What world we want to live?

||||

An international jury will short-list six finalists for the prize, who will be invited to take part in the 8th Share Festival, to be held in Torino from 30th October to 11th November 2012, at the Regional Museum of Natural Science.

The winner will receive a cash prize of EUR 2,500.00.

The names of the short-listed finalists (maximum six nominees) will be announced by the end of July 2012.

Deadline: 15 June 2012

Web Biennial 2012, Wb12: Open Call

OCCUPY CONTENT: Have we reached the end of the Internet as we knew it?

The last few years threats over the openness and the democracy of the medium have significantly augmented. With the introduction of the new Internet censorship laws on the name of intellectual property, increasing government surveillance and control under the pretense of security and continuously evolving systems of data aggregation applied by companies, the Internet territory seems to be doomed to a fatal change. No matter to which extent the new agreements will pass, how different governments and countries might react, and how companies might cooperate according to their own interests, insecurity and fear cast their shade over the Internet’s freedom.

Can networks survive with the restrictions and inhibitions being imposed to them? Can they withstand data disclosure and control? While these questions remain open, the voices rising up multiply, arguing that the internet ultimately can not be regulated and controlled. As every power feeds its counterpower and every mechanism of control, its anti-mechanism, structures can be opposed and transformed by the potentiality of resistance by millions of users around the world.

Believing that collaborative creative processes can formulate new common grounds of participation, Web Biennial 12 wishes to address a call to all creative netizens, seeking for different alternatives that can be offered.
Not only web based and net based projects but ideas, statements, platforms and tools are also welcome; as well as anything that could contribute to an open platform which aims to assist in building a free network of networks beyond control…

WB12 team: Dimitris Fotiou, Daphne Dragona, Matthias Fritsch. Web Biennial is founded by Genco Gulan.

Web Biennial 2012 – Submission instructions

Deadline: 21 June 2012

NetWORK in MOVEment is a three-part project that consists of Movement Museum, Body, Breath, Gaze Multi-museum, and Autopoiesis, Transformation, Liminality, Emergence, Presence Trans-museum.

What connects all three NETwork in moveMENT projects is the research of movement as a medium; at Movement Museum we are interested in the performance, but also the performativity of singular movement, movement as such, or pure movement; at Body, Breath and Gaze Multi-museum we are interested in the physicality of the movement – body-movement, breath-movement, gaze-movement – and the potentialities of generating new movement physicality arising from the body, breath and gaze as the singular performance media. At Autopoiesis, Transformation, Liminality, Emergence, Presence Trans-museum we are interested in performative status of the autopoietic, transformative, liminal, emergent, present movement; we would also like to approach and research – autopoiesis, transformation, liminality, emergence, presence – as a set of organic tools for making the singular movement. NETwork in moveMENT tendencies are aimed toward the creation of social network and the possibility of networking by the new language of movement, but also the attempt to make every movement visible.

Deadline: 18 May 2012

Inside Is Not The Opposite Of Outside

The next Synthetic Zero show at BronxArtSpace, “Inside is Not the Opposite of Outside” will be co-curated by Emily Roberts-Negron and Mitsu Hadeishi. We are looking for visual art, performance, experimental video, music, readings, dance, or other work for the show. The theme of the show is described below; please feel free to submit any and all work related to the theme closely or remotely.

Define extrovert. Introvert.

These two words have been interpreted and reinterpreted to conform to a general understanding of disposition. But perhaps these varying definitions illustrate a much more complex idea, that they aren’t really in opposition of one another. Perhaps the two exist on their own; individual spectrums which echo one another like the rise and fall of an ocean’s tide.

How does one describe an array of emotion, taking account of every nuance and change? This show will be an exploration of the behavior/idiosyncrasies/characteristics of introversion both as an emotional mode and a space of introspection and creative incubation, not as the polar opposite of extroversion, but overlapping with it, undulating together with it, in waves. We are looking for works across the full gradation of emotion and expression. They can be romantic, pessimistic, hairy, toothsome, frustrated, proud, intellectual, courteous, hungry, lonely, horny, cautious, congenial, meditative… together they will form a collective depiction of this singular paradoxical relation.

Please email us at events@syntheticzero.com with information about your submission; links, images, etc. See below for information on sending DVDs

If you’re submitting a DVD, you can send it to:

Call for entries
Deadline: 4 June 2012

Crystal Palace: 1st Annual Artspace Film/Video Festival, Oct. 20

Crystal Palace is an experimental film/video festival curated by Liena Vayzman for ArtSpace’s 15th Anniversary, its crystal anniversary, that calls for crystal-themed, crystallizing, and multi-faceted video and film. Non-narrative and experimental narrative work created in any film/video/digital media format is welcome. Projection will be accepted in DVD format only. Crystals include snowflakes, diamonds, ice crystals, gems like amethyst, and salt, and we call for work that explores these references in abstract or narrative form, or takes as a starting point the scientific, chemical, cultural, or mathematical aspects of crystals.

Additionally, submissions are encouraged that interpret the theme structurally by applying the metaphor of a crystal as a geometrical shape of flat surfaces with specific, characteristic orientations to the structure of the film/video project. Cultural investigations might included crystals as luxury and kitsch (Swarowski crystal swans, chandeliers); serious or tongue-in-cheek healing artifacts (healing crystals, crystals as magical objects, x-rays of crystals and their photographic/filmic permutations).

Like the Crystal Palace plate-glass building, a marvel of engineering constructed by Joseph Paxton for the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London, ArtSpace’s Crystal Palace aims to illuminate and amaze. Broad interpretation is welcome – send us your crystalline creations and multi-faceted video gems! The film/video festival will take place over two days, Oct. 20-21, 2012, in conjunction with ArtSpace’s City-Wide Open Studios festival, which is a convening of visual artists from across Connecticut in temporary studios and spaces throughout New Haven; the film/video festival is open to all artists, national and international. We welcome non-narrative or experimental narrative work playing on the theme of transparency, multiple facets, and processes of crystallization, or anything related to crystals or the Crystal Palace theme.

Technical details: Single channel, two-channel, or three-channel/installation work is possible. Silent or sound work welcome; any length is welcome. Sculptural and non-DVD projector projections are possible, but artist must be provide all equipment and be present to install and screen during their projection on Sat Oct. 20- Sun. Oct. 21, 12-5pm.

To submit: send (1) DVD or online link of entire film/video; (3) title, length, and date of work, (3) name, email, website, contact info, phone number; (4) Artist or Project Statement (100 words), and (5) submission fee of $10 by check made out to ArtSpace. Send to Artspace c/o Crystal Palace Film/Video, 50 Orange Street, New Haven, CT 06511. Materials other than the check may be sent via online to Liena@artspacenh.org.

Small honoraria may be available to cover artist’s local travel. For more information about ArtSpace exhibitions, programs, and the annual Open Studios festival, please see http://artspacenh.org/
Deadline: 26 October 2012

Hi)story/ies – Traverse Vidéo –
16 th edition – March 2013 in Toulouse

Often, in the desire of comforting classification, experimental is the refusal of narrative, and conversely by the privilege it accords to artistic symbols.

However, impelled by « making » the experimental, certain proposals emerge. In reaction against regulations, rules, the consensual, they sketch out stories.

In doing so, they avoid decision or completion – in the terrific polysemy – they provoke a palpitation of the senses.

The experimental approach manipulates the desire to achieve a certitude, even if referential fragments, traces of experience are there.

That is why the 16th edition Traverse Video wishes to engage this bipolarity with (Hi)story/ies.

Meetings of experimental practices, Traverse Video program films, videos, installations, performances and photography.

Selection is made :

- For movies and videos: on DVD with synopsis and images,

- Plus, for performances and installations: extremely precise specifications

- and For photography: reproductions with indication of the original format.

A registration form specific to the medium must be printed from our website, and joined to your submission.

Installation
Performance
Photography
Video
We can not send back files if they are not accompanied by a self addressed stamped envelope.

Traverse Vidéo will start March 13, 2013, we welcome your submissions until Friday, October 26, 2012.

Deadline: 11 May 2012

Zero1 Biennial Spaces

ArtHERE is a platform for crowd-sourced urban revitalization through the matching of art and place.

ARTHERE SILICON VALLEY

In a joint effort to highlight creative place making solutions, ZERO1 and the San Jose Public Art Program co-commissioned Bay Area based artists and community activists, ArtHERE, to launch ArtHERE SiliconValley. This new initiative has been developed in partnership with the Gray Area Foundation for the Arts (GAFFTA); UCSC OpenLab; and supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Dean Yager’s Research Initiative Fund and Arts Dean’s Excellence Fund at the University of California Santa Cruz.

The inspiration for “ArtHERE” was developed at the 2011 GAFFTA Summer of Smart Hackathon with the desire to create an online tool enabling city communities and artists to activate empty and under-utilized urban spaces – therefore enabling local communities to curate and actively transform their own neighborhoods. ArtHERE is launching the project pilot ArtHERE:SiliconValley throughout the Bay Area as part of the 2012 ZERO1 Biennial, with a specific focus on San Jose’s SoFA arts district – the hub of the Biennial. ZERO1 has worked with the local community, businesses and arts organizations to make a series of spaces available that range from storefront windows and building facades, to outdoor projections and park-lets.

Artists are now invited to temporarily animate these spaces (leaving no trace afterward) with site-specific installations in response to the 2012 ZERO1 Biennial thematic Seeking Silicon Valley. The goal is to use the architecture of the district as a canvas and effectively connect pathways between local businesses and organizations through vibrant and interactive artworks that reflect the creativity and innovation that Silicon Valley is known for. Details of each space are listed individually as open calls.

Cologne International Videoart Festival
will be launching in September a new festival platform dedicated to experimental and artistic documentary as a new format in the field of “art & moving images”, named
exDox – Cologne Experimental Documentary Film Festival

Any kind of art has a documenting character, even abstract painting, but “moving images” used as a medium are not per se art. The documentary as a particular filmic format has mostly not even the intention to be art, at all.
So, it is really interesting to explore “art & moving images” for their potential to create documentaries following new and experimental paths.

As a corporate part of Cologne International Videoart Festival
exDox – Cologne Experimental Documentary Film Festival – will be presented in the specific nomadic festival format as it is manifested in CologneOFF 20XX – videoart in a global context
http://downloads.nmartproject.net/CologneOFF2012_eng.pdf

exDox – Cologne Experimental Documentary Film Festival
is looking for documentaries which are considered by their creators as art works using video as a medium in all its variety, for new and experimental artistic approaches in transforming the ideas of documenting essential issues of human existence into the language of the “moving images”, and is inviting film & video creators – to submit up to 3 works of experimental forms of film and video art – (exclusively) online by using the entry form below

Deadline: 30 July 2012

VIDA, the Art and Artificial Life International Awards
begun in 1999 by Fundación Telefónica, was created with the mission of supporting creative endeavours in this singular field by rewarding the pioneering efforts of artists. We are now pleased to announce the launch of the VIDA 14.0, which for the last 14 years have been rewarding artistic projects developed with technological media that offer innovative insights into the study of artificial life.

At a time when the concept of life finds itself once again in uncharted territory, a wide range of artistic initiatives attempt to illustrate and explore this phenomenon, examining its impact on our collective consciousness and how it affects the cultural, technological and social mindset.

Over the past decade, VIDA has welcomed a variety of interdisciplinary projects that respond to this situation and brought them together in a single forum. Using formal strategies that push the boundaries between existing practices, these projects offer new perspectives that force us to reconsider our pre-existing notions of life and artificial life.
What types of projects receive a VIDA 14.0?

The VIDA Award is granted to artistic creations developed using artificial life technology. Among the projects submitted to VIDA, the artists’ ties to this theme and their choice of media are very diverse. Throughout its history, the competition has welcomed proposals that challenge the boundary between living and non-living, between natural and synthetic, either by juxtaposing both realities or by creating overlapping spaces for reflection.

The winning projects include robotic systems, immersive installations, online video games, autonomous self-organising devices and evolutionary indicators. Another common characteristic of past winners is the use of interactive and immersive installations—a response to today’s environment of technological entities—which attempt to communicate with visitors by making them part of the system. Chimerical devices that combine natural and artificial elements, telepresence systems, network structures that operate as artificial intelligences, invasive dynamics of increasing complexity and acumen—these are just some of the themes addressed by the artists who participate in VIDA. From the very first edition to the present day, we have rewarded artists who have applied traditional artificial life technologies to their work, such as cellular automata, autonomous agents, neural networks, robotics, interactive systems, virtual ecologies and evolving software. What all of these projects have in common is that they involve emergent behaviours which grow more sophisticated over time, react with their environment and seem to show signs of autonomous life.

In recent years we have observed an increasing hybridisation of media and formats among the projects submitted to VIDA, which has led us to advocate the category’s expansion in order to trace the evolution of this field. The competition has gradually extended its scope, maintaining its interest in projects that involve conventional artificial life research while also venturing into new, cutting-edge territories such as life sciences and environmental sciences. In short, we could say that VIDA rewards artistic projects that are related to any dynamic life process affected by simulation.

As in previous years, contestants are invited to submit proposals in one of two categories:

CATEGORY “FINALISED PROJECTS”
In this category, Vida 14.0 rewards artistic artificial life projects developed after the year 2010. A total of 40,000 euros will be divided among the three winning projects chosen by the jury: First Prize: 18,000 euros; Second Prize: 14,000 euros; Third Prize: 8,000 euros. Seven honorary mentions will also be awarded to projects chosen by the jury from among the finalists.

CATEGORY “INCENTIVES FOR PRODUCTION”
In this category, Vida 14.0 helps to finance artistic artificial life projects that have not yet been produced. It is reserved for artists who are citizens or residents of any country in Latin America, Spain or Portugal. This category is also endowed with 40,000 euros to be divided among the selected projects.

IMPORTANT DATES

Project submissions will be accepted from 23rd April to 30th July 2012.

All projects must be submitted before midnight (Central European Time) on 30th July 2012.

JURY
Submitted projects will be reviewed by an international jury consisting of Mónica Bello (Spain), Jens Hauser (France), Martin Kaltenbrunner (Austria), Karla Jasso (Mexico), Sally Jane Norman (New Zealand/France), Nell Tenhaaf (Canada) and Francisco Serrano, Executive Director of Fundación Telefónica.

TROVE call out for toys and short films based on toys
Exhibition dates 15th – 23rd June 2012

TROVE is an independent art space in Birmingham, UK, which run a
monthly changing programme of contemporary art exhibitions/events.
http://trove.org.uk

In June 2012 TROVE, with Antonio Roberts, are hosting an exhibition
about toys. This project leads on from the discovery that the
Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham, where TROVE is based, used to produce
more ‘toys’ than jewellery, guns or pens; all things it is now more
famously known for producing. When researching what toys were
produced in this area of Birmingham it was discovered that the term
‘toys’ was used to describe items such as buttons, cuff-links and belt
buckles.

With the misinterpretation of the word ‘toys’ TROVE are looking for
films about actual toys, as is the current understanding of the word,
that have been altered, hacked, modified or electronically changed,
rather than ‘toys’ meaning belt buckles, buttons etc.

—-TROVE call out for toys—-

TROVE are inviting you to submit examples of your modified toys to:
antonio@hellocatfood.com

Please email Antonio and include:
* your CV and a short personal statement
* a short description of the work/toys
* links to online footage of the toy is available
* max 6 photographs of the toy/s you are proposing

Notes for application:
* please make sure you can deliver and collect your toys from TROVE;
11th/12th June for drop off and 24th June for collection.
* we will only be accepting applications where toys are battery powered

For further info please contact Antonio on the above email address.

—-TROVE call out for short films based on toys—-

TROVE are inviting you to submit examples of films based on the theme
of toys to:
* max 6 photographs of the toy/s you are proposing

Notes for application:
* please make sure your films is 10 minutes long or less
* we will be screening more than one film at a time so we will not be
exhibiting films that rely on sound
Deadline: 1 September 2012

Cell Phone Video Art Project

Heart 2 Heart is a collaborative video project that asks people to record a conversation with their phones about their mutual relationship.

We are currently seeking submissions, which will be curated and edited together into a film.

Background:
Our phones have become a vital part of our lives: they tell us what our day looks like, allow us to send info all over the world, are a great diversion, and in some senses have allowed us a freedom (on a social and business level) that we’ve never had before.

Yet we don’t often think that they – themselves are the ones that have facilitated the changes. Though if you spent the amount of time with another person that you do with your phone, you’d inevitably be in a pretty committed relationship.

The hope of this project is that through the dialogue it facilitates, we’ll start to gain a better understanding of the effects of cell phones on our daily lives and will gain further insight into the unintentional relationships we’ve gained to a piece of electronics.

Deadline: 21 January 2013

Computer Music Journal – Special Issue On Live Coding

We are excited to announce a call for papers for a special issue of Computer Music Journal, with a deadline of 21st January 2013, for publication in Spring of the following year. The issue will be guest edited by Alex McLean, Julian Rohrhuber and Nick Collins, and will address themes surrounding live coding practice.

Live coding focuses on a computer musician’s relationship with their computer. It includes programming a computer as an explicit onstage act, as a musical prototyping tool with immediate feedback, and also as a method of collaborative programming. Live coding’s tension between immediacy and indirectness brings about a mediating role for computer language within musical interaction. At the same time, it implies the rewriting of algorithms, as descriptions which concern the future; live coding may well be the missing link between composition and improvisation. The proliferation of interpreted and just-in-time compiled languages for music and the increasing computer literacy of artists has made such programming interactions a new hotbed of musical practice and theory. Many musicians have begun to design their own particular representational extensions to existing general-purpose languages, or even to design their own live coding languages from scratch. They have also brought fresh energy to visual programming language design, and new insights to interactive computation, pushing at the boundaries through practice-based research. Live coding also extends out beyond pure music and sound to the general digital arts, including audiovisual systems, linked by shared abstractions.

2014 happens to be the ten-year anniversary of the live coding organisation TOPLAP (toplap.org). However, we do not wish to restrict the remit of the issue to this, and we encourage submissions across a sweep of emerging practices in computer music performance, creation, and theory. Live coding research is more broadly about grounding computation at the verge of human experience, so that work from computer system design to exposition of live coding concert work is equally eligible.

Topic suggestions include, but are not limited by:

- Programming as a new form of musical exploration
- Embodiment and linguistic abstraction
- Symbology in music interaction
- Uniting liveness and abstraction in live music
- Bricolage programming in music composition
- Human-Computer Interaction study of live coding
- The psychology of computer music programming
- Measuring live coding and metrics for live performance
- The live coding audience, or live coding without audience
- Visual programming environments for music
- Alternative models of computation in music
- Representing time in interactive programming
- Representing and manipulating history in live performance
- Freedoms, constraints and affordances in live coding environments

Authors should follow all CMJ author guidelines (http://www.mitpressjournals.org/page/sub/comj), paying particular attention to the maximum length of 25 double-spaced pages.

Submissions should be received by 21st January 2013. All submissions and queries should be addressed to Alex McLean
