Deadline: 9 June 2013

The Cord Prize, is a new international contemporary art award established to support and acknowledge the practice of early and mid-career visual artists. The award comprises an individual first prize of $10,000, second prize of $1,000, and third prize of $500. Additionally, twenty-two artists will be selected for online exhibition and a piece of writing will be commissioned from the award jurors.

http://cordprize.com/

The inaugural Cord Prize – Contemporary art photography
Photography has become a universally accepted, unchallenged, medium of contemporary art. Concomitantly, photography’s capacity to influence our everyday lives has become exponentially important with the ubiquity of visual social media and the opening up of the possibilities for us to communicate and disseminate our photographic images independently of institutional support. It could be said that the ubiquity which photography has achieved, its establishment in the contemporary art canon, is both a blessing and a problem – marking a new beginning, a place to start from all over again, yet more challenging than ever to make meaningful photographic work that resonates in cultural spaces and will endure. The inaugural Cord Prize invites early and mid-career artists who are working within the field of photography to apply.

The brief
Against this setting, applicants to the inaugural prize are invited to submit up to 16 images of current work from a wholly or partially photo-based practice, using any photographic process or medium. Applications should be accompanied by a resume, and text of up to 400 words detailing the artist’s research and practice. Applicants may also wish to contextualise their work within what they see as the significant cultural issues at play within contemporary art photography.

Submissions close at midnight (GMT) on 9th June 2013.

We are extremely pleased and excited to announce the jurors for this first edition of the award are the hugely respected and admired curators and writers Diana Edkins and Charlotte Cotton.

The jurors’ selection will be announced approximately two weeks after the deadline.

About
The Cord Prize, established by UK games industry veteran EA Lindsay, will be followed later in the year by the launch of CordContemporary, an online only gallery, presenting a portfolio of invited artists, partially selected from submissions to the various editions of the award. The ambition of CordContemporary is to establish the online gallery, with a programme of exhibitions supported by critical writing and serious curatorial practice, as a viable cultural presence; and a place to look forward to visiting as one would a physical gallery.

The Cord Prize will be awarded twice-annually, alternating focus on specific disciplines, with curated themes and critical surveys; and with photo-based practice as a recurring thread.

Residence Period: 1.6/2014 – 31.3.2015

Visual artists are invited to apply to the Youkobo residence program for the period June 2014 to March 2015. Priority will be given to applications for residencies of two months or longer which present dynamic but well-considered proposals realizable at Youkobo.

Background Information

Based in Tokyo with over 10 years of experience of hosting international artists, Youkobo has developed a unique residence program focused on supporting the creative activities of artists. While conveniently located in the west of Tokyo to allow easy access to the center, the Youkobo facility is set within a residential area which provides an environment conducive to work in the studio.

With two accommodation spaces/studios for residence artists and a gallery for artists based in Japan, Youkobo has become a vital platform for exchange between artists of many different backgrounds and genres, while at the same time providing opportunities for engagement with the local community and wider art scene through an extensive domestic and international network.

______________________________________

CTF – Collective Trauma Film Collections – http://ctf.engad.org
is a worldwide unique initiative by Agricola de Cologne (director of Cologne International Videoart Festival http://coff.newmediafest.org and Cologne Art & Moving Images Awards http://camia.mediaartcologne.org) addressed to young generations of artists and filmmakers to deal with the topic of collective trauma caused by totalitarism by using new technologies and contemporary approaches in art in order to keep vivid the memory for future generations via art.

As a corporate part of “Cologne Art & Moving Images Awards”, the Cologne based platform covering a wide range of activities around “art & moving images”, and based on two previously initiated film collections on collective traum, i.e SFC – Shoah Film Collection (http://dts.engad.org – founded in 2010) and the collection “Cambodia 1975-1979″ (http://ctf.engad.org/?page_id=19 – founded in 2012), CTF – Collective Trauma Film Collection was initiated to form the dynamic framework and living database for individual film collections dealing with specific forms of collective trauma as they can perceived in different parts on the globe under most different political, economical, social, religious and cultural conditions. There is hardly any country left on our globe where people do not suffer from the excesses of the dark side of human existence.

For presenting CTF – Collective Trauma Film Collections, in 2012 a special event context has been created, i.e “A Virtual Memorial – Commemorative Interventions”, which places the divers collections of films and videos in the context of complementary interventions like lectures, a symposion, exhibitions, artists talks, discussions and much more, in order to activate the audience, as well as the artists and filmmakers to deal with the collective trauma which is affecting them personally, their family, their country or nation or continent. In 2012, the first three (3) events took place – “A Virtual Memorial Riga 2012″ – http://riga2012.a-virtual-memorial.org standing under the Patronage of the European Parliament, “A Virtual Memorial Phnom Penh 2012″ http://phnompenh2012.a-virtual-memorial.org, and “A Virtual Memorial Warsaw 2012″ – http://warsaw2012.a-virtual-memorial.org. For 2013, the next events are planned in Lithuania, Belgium and Latin America.

As an initiative, CTF would like to give the message to the world that the cause for the collective trauma, the discriminations, violence, persecutions, torture and exterminations caused by totalitarism must no happen again or continue in case of contemporary totalitarism, this is good for the genocides, the state terrorism and other crimes against humanity, like Holocaust, the Stalinism, the Cambodian genocide 1975-1879, the state terrorism of the Argentine military dictorships of 20th century, the Italian Fascism or any other of the countless causes for collective trauma happening in the Past or even nowadays before our very eyes in our neighbor’s garden or transmitted daily via the media like press, TV and Internet. Individual trauma remains very often the basic living condition for a whole human life, as well as the collective trauma may form the psychological condition of a nation for many centuries, if people do not try to overcome the trauma actively.

From the early beginning of human civilization, art was that type of medium which was transporting the individual and collective memory of Past and Present to the Future, so there is no better way for keeping vivid the memory of the collective trauma by sensitizing people via art, and no other artistic expression is more predestined to represent processes than “moving images”.

No matter what kind of crime against humanity one is facing, all of them must be understood as a more or less long lasting process an individual is undergoing, starting already in the smallest social nucleus, i.e. the family, the discriminations in school or the lack of respect for people from different social, cultural, ethnic or religious contexts, the intolerance, thus conditions of daily life, all people on the globe can identify with.

These slowly or rapidly escalating processes may lead under certain political, economical, social and cultural circumstances to the worst excesses human beings are able to as they were happening in 20th century in new industrialized forms, like the Holocaust.

In an artistic sense, the final result of these excesses are less of interest than exploring the escalating processes, i.e. what is happening to the individual at different stages during these processes of increasing discriminations, violence, persecutions and torture.

Very often the contemporary living conditions in a family or society are representing a mirror of the historical processes. In this way, facing the Presence may give an access for understanding the Past to the artist, as well as the viewer of art.

CTF – Collective Trauma Film Collections
would like to motivate the artists and filmmakers from all over the world to search for new exciting visions and approaches including countless emotionally and intellectually challenging aspects, people can identify with.

CTF – Collective Trauma Film Collections
is releasing the call in first place in English, addressed to all artists and filmmakers on the globe, but the call will be soon also available in different languages in order to reach particularly artists and filmmakers in Latin America, the former Eastern block countries including Russia and former Yugoslavia and, regarding the dictatorships in Southern Europe, Portugal, Spain, Italy & Greece.

CTF – Collective Trauma Film Collections
is looking for a variety of artistic forms using the medium of video, i.e. experimental films, videoart and documentaries.

The official release of the call on 1 January 2013 and the deadline of 1 July 2013 offers additionally sufficient time for creating new artworks to be submitted.

Deadline: 20 May 2013

DID YOU PLUG IT IN? Fool Your Smartness
call for artworks and papers

Smart phones, smart tickets, smart cities, smart cars, smart buildings, smart living, smart economies, smart moves…

Smart abounds in the market-speak of today’s technologically sophisticated conditions. The ever-growing inflation of smartness, fostered in large part by the pervasiveness of digital technologies, hails us from all directions. Smart appears as a strategic device that qualifies all sorts of acts and objects under the hegemony of the economy-political logic of consumption, profit and control. New and ever-smarter products of all kinds pop-up regularly and one risks being left behind by not heeding the call, the constant invitation to try out and to consume the latest.

While smartness is praised and suggested as a sort of power to be possessed, foolishness becomes those moments and spaces in which we encounter with critical interrogation, creative thinking and deconstruction. We suggest foolishness as a category of thought and a tactical positioning to bring out the subversive potential of smart technologies.

We invite artworks and papers that rethink, open up a
amberFestival is interested in interactive installations and papers that explore its title

With the subtitle of “Fool your smartness”. We are suggesting several discussions around the theme from market-speak of todays sophisticated -so called- smart technologies to foolishnes, from the “drama” of being unconnected to commedy of it.

We see the theme as a tool to think and work with, and the festival as an opportunity to raise an artistic voice. You alone will define that voice.

The works selected among the applications to this international call, will be exhibited at amber’13 Art and Technology Festival. We also encourage outdoor interactive installations.

Deadline: 17 May 2013

Marl Video Art Award 2013

The works submitted for the Video Art Award 2013 must relate
thematically, formally or in its presentation to the specific (museum) space. Therefore its ideal presentation location should not be a cinema space. The spatial reference here also means avoiding linear narrative structures while featuring a different, non-linear temporal structure, such as a loop, which is ideal for presentation in a museum. While classic, single-channel videos on a monitor or projected on a screen remain acceptable, preference is given to multi-channel installations and installations extended through use of additional materials.

Works submitted must have been produced after January 2010. Twenty works will be selected by the jury for the exhibition in the museum and will be presented together with the projects selected for the Sound Art Award 013.

EUROPEAN SOUNDART AWARD

Since its inception in 2002, the German Klangkunst-Preis has been
awarded to artistic works focusing specifically on fostering the
creative use of space and sound. In addition to the intrinsic artistic quality, acoustic assurance and sculptural certainty are above all the criteria for assessment and evaluation. Beginning in 2014, the EUROPEAN SOUNDART AWARD will expand the German Klangkunst-Preis onto a Europe-wide platform and include the entire genre of acoustic art.

The 2013 competition already incorporates the European orientation,
while remaining true to the constituting principles of the German
Klangkunst-Preis. Thus, the title: From the German Klangkunst-Preis to
the EUROPEAN SOUNDART AWARD. This year’s competition marks the founders’ conclusion of the decade-long phase of the German Klangkunst-Preis.

For the Klangkunst-Preis 2013, existing artworks based on spatially
influenced sound creations should be entered. A jury of experts will
select works for an exhibition in the Glaskasten Marl Museum of
Sculpture, to open 20 October 2013. Additionally, the same jury members will also invite a number of competing artists to Marl in the summer of 2013 to develop a concept for the creative design of the city centre.
One of these concepts will be selected for completion.

The Klangkunst-Preis 2013 is to be awarded by the Museum of Sculpture
Glaskasten Marl, Culture Radio wdr 3 and the Initiative Hören.

Synthetic Zero Art/Video/Performance Event

The next Synthetic Zero Event will be on July 3 and 6 at BronxArtSpace, only 20 minutes from Union Square. We’re looking for visual art, performance, experimental video, music, readings, dance and other work for the show.

The Synthetic Zero events are a series of DIY art events focusing on high quality experimental and contemporary work in different media. We typically do not have a specific theme for each event but instead work with ideas that emerge from the interaction between submitted work and curatorial interests. By working this way, we hope the events reflect back the dialogue and practice of artists involved and create evocative encounters for the audience. In the past, a diverse set of curators has chosen work by artists from around the world, including Miranda July, Yoshi Sodeoka, Zoe Leonard, Hector Canonge, Benton Bainbridge, and many others. Prior event programs can be found here.

Deadline: 31 July 2013

VIDA 15.0 Art and Artificial Life International Awards

We are pleased to announce the launch of VIDA 15.0, Art and Artificial Life International Awards. As we begin accepting submissions for this year’s awards, we will be looking for artistic projects that offer innovative perspectives on life by using the latest technology and cutting-edge scientific knowledge.

VIDA the Art and Artificial Life International Awards begun in 1999 by Fundación Telefónica, it was created with the mission of supporting creative endeavors in this singular field by rewarding the pioneering efforts of artists. At a time when the concept of life finds itself once again in uncharted territory, a wide range of artistic initiatives attempt to illustrate and explore this phenomenon, examining its impact on our collective consciousness and how it affects the cultural, technological and social mindset. Over the past decade, VIDA has welcomed a variety of interdisciplinary projects that respond to this situation and brought them together in a single forum. Using formal strategies that push the boundaries between existing practices, these projects offer new perspectives that force us to reconsider our pre-existing notions of life and artificial life.

VIDA 15.0 supports excellence in artistic research into artificial life. Projects that win a VIDA Award must be capable of expressing the complex organization of life systems and the hybrid nature of life. The VIDA jury will evaluate artistic projects that meet these criteria and, more importantly, will select those projects that challenge our current understanding and definition of life.

As in previous years, contestants are invited to submit proposals in one (or both) of two categories:

CATEGORY “FINALISED PROJECTS”
In this category, Vida 15.0 rewards artistic artificial life projects developed after the year 2011.

A total of 42,500 euros will be divided among the three winning projects chosen by the jury:
First Prize: 18,000 euros;
Second Prize: 14,000 euros;
Third Prize: 8,000 euros.
Seven honorary mentions will also be awarded to projects chosen by the jury from among the finalists.

In addition to the winners of the three main prizes, we will also choose seven participants to receive honorable mentions and compete for the special People’s Choice Award. Of these mentions, only the People’s Choice Award is endowed with a cash prize, the amount of which will be 2,500 euros. The People’s Choice Award will go to the project that receives the most votes from the public in the seven days immediately following the announcement of the official award winners (on October 2013). Votes will be cast electronically on the VIDA website and social networks.

CATEGORY “INCENTIVES FOR PRODUCTION”
In this category, Vida 15.0 helps to finance artistic artificial life projects that have not yet been produced. It is reserved for artists who are citizens or residents of any country in Latin America, Spain or Portugal. This category is also endowed with 40,000 euros to be divided among five selected projects.

VIDA 15.0 launches the Incentives I+D Prize with the aim of encouraging innovation using the latest artificial life technologies. Of the five award-winning projects of the Incentives for Production category one will receive additional support to assist with its technological development. The awarded artist will receive assistance from experts on research, development and innovation of Telefonica team in cutting-edge information technologies. In addition to benefiting from regular advice and contact online, the artist/s will also be invited to spend a maximum of one month in Telefónica’s innovation department in Barcelona (Spain).

IMPORTANT DATES
Project submissions will be accepted from 23rd April to 31th July 2013.
All projects must be submitted before midnight (Central European Time) on 31th July 2013.

Deadline: 17 July 2013

Site Gallery Platform Residencies

Site Gallery is now accepting applications for its acclaimed Platform residency programme. Open to all UK based contemporary visual artists, artists are invited to propose an idea for which they need time, space and investment to develop to proof of concept stage

Site’s Platform programme enables artists to take over the public galleries and use them as a working public studio in which to make new work. Unlike a traditional research and development residency, visitors to the gallery will be able to enter the space throughout and therefore public engagement, dialogue and debate is integral. The opportunity will suit artists seeking to test new ideas in public and who are interested in connecting with others through their work.

Three artists will be selected for residencies that will take place between January and May 2014.

Each residency is worth £6,000 including:
- a production budget
- a fee
- the use of the galleries for a period of 2-4 weeks
- accommodation
- a writer to produce a critical text on the artist’s practice
- the support of a mentor
- public events

Online application at www.sitegallery.org. £10 application fee. Application deadline: 5pm, Friday 17 July 2013.

Deadline: 15 May 2013

Festival Of (In)Appropriation 2013!

Since its inauguration in 2009, the Festival of (In)appropriation has emerged as a premiere international showcase of experimental found footage film and video, attracting the work of artists who probe the limits of collage, machinima, re-mix, détournement, mash-up, and more, across an array of moving-image media.

Co-curated by Jaimie Baron, Lauren Berliner, and Greg Cohen, and sponsored by Los Angeles Filmforum, the Festival of (In)appropriation invites submissions for its 5th edition, to take place in Los Angeles in November 2013. Filmmakers and video artists engaged in the appropriation, re-purposing, and productive “mis-use” of existing visual and sonic media are encouraged to send us their work for consideration.

All entries must include some form of inventive (in)appropriation, whether of existing/archival film or video footage, sound recordings, still imagery, or digital media. The most competitive submissions are those which seek to produce revelations and reconsiderations of the relationship between past and present, here and there, truth and lie, intention and subversion.

To submit your work, please follow the link below to our website, where you can download the official Call for Entries and attached Submission Form. Then, send your entry to the address listed here.

Call for entries
Deadline: 17 May 2013

Marler Media Art Awards 2013

Since 1984 the Museum of Sculpture Glaskasten Marl has hosted the Video Art Award, and since 2002 the Sound Art Award, which will be further developed to the EUROPEAN SOUNDART AWARD.

The Museum in Marl has shaped the unique profile of the Marl Media
Awards not only through its orientation as a sculpture museum, but alsoon the strength of its placement in the modernist architecture of the Town Hall, completed in 1966. Because sculpture is a genus to which multifocality and spatial reference are crucial, the video art
competition was for the first time launched with a specific substantive focus—for all artists whose video works address questions of spatiality. The works submitted for the Video Art Award must relate thematically, formally or in its presentation to the specific (museum) space. The same idea applies to the parallel competition in sound art. The national restriction has also been dropped, and the new competitions are announced internationally.

The closing date for submissions for both competitions is 17 May 2013.

Two international prize-juries for video art and sound art will select the winners of the Marler Media Art Awards 2013, whose works will be exhibited in the Museum of Sculpture Glaskasten Marl.

The awards ceremony of the Marler Media Art Awards 2013 and the
exhibition opening will take place on 20 October 2013 in the Museum of Sculpture Glaskasten Marl.

Marler Video Art Award 2013

The works submitted for the Video Art Award 2013 must relate
thematically, formally or in its presentation to the specific (museum) space. Therefore its ideal presentation location should not be a cinema space. The spatial reference here also means avoiding linear narrative structures while featuring a different, non-linear temporal structure, such as a loop, which is ideal for presentation in a museum. Whileclassic, single-channel videos on a monitor or projected on a screen
remain acceptable, preference is given to multi-channel installations
and installations extended through use of additional materials.

Works submitted must have been produced after January 2010. Twenty works will be selected by the jury for the exhibition in the museum and will be presented together with the projects selected for the Sound Art Award 2013.

From the German Klangkunst-Preis to the EUROPEAN SOUNDART AWARD

Since its inception in 2002, the German Klangkunst-Preis has been
awarded to artistic works focusing specifically on fostering the
creative use of space and sound. In addition to the intrinsic artistic
quality, acoustic assurance and sculptural certainty are above all the
criteria for assessment and evaluation. Beginning in 2014, the EUROPEAN
SOUNDART AWARD will expand the German Klangkunst-Preis onto a
Europe-wide platform and include the entire genre of acoustic art.

Additionally, the same jury members
will also invite a number of competing artists to Marl in the summer of
2013 to develop a concept for the creative design of the city centre.
One of these concepts will be selected for completion.

The Klangkunst-Preis 2013 is to be awarded by the Museum of Sculpture
Glaskasten Marl, Culture Radio wdr 3 and the Initiative Hören.

Further information on Marler Media Art Awards 2013 and application
forms can be found at
Deadline: 10 May 2013

Darkness at the edge… curated by Thom Sokoloski

Darkness at the edge…
There are places we find ourselves where light fades and darkness arrives.

That edge, precipice, or boundary, where the light meets the dark, can become a threshold into an unknown abyss or terrain.

It might be the moment after opening the door to reveal the darkness of your home or studio. Entering a cave on a bright day. Looking out at a moon-lit lake of dark water that you would never dare dive into. The end of an affair, marriage or friendship. We have all looked into the darkness at the edge, the place where we let go of what we had, knew or cherished.

Darkness at the edge is about those moments of liminality; the quality of ambiguity or disorientation that occurs in life and dream when you no longer hold what you held, but have not yet begun the transition to what you will hold. During a ritual’s liminal stage, a participant “stands at the threshold,” often in a state of contemplation of what was and what could be.

I am looking for submissions that engage the public in the immediacy of these moments, an act of contemplation rather than an exercise in nostalgia.

All media will be considered.

-Thom Sokoloski

Deadline: Friday, May 10, 2013 @ 5pm
Exhibition dates: June 12- 30, 2013

Please consider the following;
Before entering the gallery, the public will be able view a selection of works contained in the storefront area that will be enclosed and viewed through peepholes. Propeller’s storefront window measures 65” (165 cm) wide x 80” (203 cm) height. The total area of this portion will measure 10 x 6 ft (please see gallery floor plan). Smaller works which can hung, wall-mounted or be free-standing considered.

Propeller’s Main Gallery the viewing experience will be that of a darker space. Traditional spot lighting will be used in this space for all works unless otherwise communicated or self-illuminated such as video.

The viewing experience in Propeller’s North Gallery will be in complete darkness. Works will be illuminated from mini-light sources carried by the viewer. Propeller asks that artists not propose works that could be damaged by or cause harm to the viewer – no sharp edges or obstacles.

The research will discuss and explore how the practice of the digital artist is transitioning, not only with the growth of digital technologies, but are increasingly being informed by offline factors that are affecting how the Internet as a creative platform is being developed. Run Computer, Run takes place during GLITCH festival at Rua Red from May 24 – July 13.

We are currently accepting submissions for the following categories:

CALL FOR ARTWORKS
How do we give value to immaterial goods? How do we buy and sell digital images? What is the relationship between economics and digital aesthetics? How can curators and artists create new platforms and models for the creation of economic exchange? These are some of the questions that this show attempts to answer. We are currently accepting artwork (video, jpg, gifs, 3d models or HTML content) that will feature in a unique gallery-based exhibition. The exhibition is composed of two parts – a gallery-sited virtual show, and the online production and distribution of materially-realised limited-edition goods.

In the gallery, each artist will be represented by an AR-code – an augmented reality marker embedded with visual information that can only be viewed with the aid of a computer or smart-phone. As visitors walk through the gallery, they can interact with the markers using either their smart-phone or one of the tablets that will be provided by the gallery.

The artwork submitted will then be produced as a series of limited-edition goods including apparel and digital prints. These goods will be made available online for the duration of GLITCH.

The following products will be produced for each artist included in this exhibition:
1 Limited Edition Tee (run of 20)
1 Limited Edition tote bag (run of 20)
1 A5 postcard
1 A3 digital print (run of 30)

These goods will be made available via this website for the duration of GLITCH.

All profits from the sale of these goods go to the corresponding artist.

Before submitting please consult our technical spec for file types, and use our templates for submitting work.

Artwork that is not sent according to the technical spec or design templates will not be accepted as submissions.

Artworks will be exhibited using the Layar platform

The 5th Screengrab International New Media Arts Award and associated exhibition is looking for challenging creative works by media arts practitioners working in screen based media to submit works on the theme of AMBIENCE.

                    2013 Award Theme

Big beautiful data is everywhere. Sounds are everywhere. Images are everywhere. Our lives are tracked relentlessly. The network sends and receives everything. We capture, post, follow, share and archive. Data becomes us.

March 2013 was the 100-year anniversary of the publication of Luigi Rusullo’s Art of Noises, and in the ensuing century the proliferation of mechanical noise has reached a critical density. Our accumulated audio-visual virtuality has been working towards a zeitgeist moment for some time. David Gelernter, researcher at Yale, has been foregrounding the concept of “life streaming” for several decades. Now it would seem, the stream has become a torrent.

Today we live to the beat of signals, alarms and alerts – a constant stream of audio-visual reminders that we live in increments of time amidst layers of metadata. We move and we are tracked by GPS, recognised by software, matched against databases, evaluated by life-tracking devices and mapped by our profiles and usernames. This new aesthetic of machine ambience is at once an embodiment of our private present selves but also an ambient beautification of what lies in our wake. Photo streams, playlists, check-ins, recommendations, resolutions, bucket-lists, posts, comments and feeds all embellishing the spaces and flows of our virtual habitats. We have become the exquisite beast in the garden, with all her flair, colour and boundless expression.

Images of you and me and us are embedded into this fanfare as icons of our identity. This aural and visual accumulation of our lives has created an immense data pool that is embellished by everything we see and everything that we say on the network. This meta-ambience is cross-fading our public, commercial and private spaces like tracks on an iPod Shuffle. We remix our environment by just being present in it. We bring our own signal noise with us wherever we go. We are fast becoming the sample bank of a dense ambient mix of images and sound.

But what does this look like? With what forms of expression is this data being exposed? How do we construct our own ambient worlds? How is Big Data constructing it for us? What do we show and what do we choose to conceal and what is beyond our control? Where does our ambience end and where do that of others begin? How do our rituals of culture, work and family inform who we are through the ambient streams we leave in our wake?

The 5th International Screengrab New Media Arts Award seeks works that explore the theme of ambience – personal, virtual and commercial – and all its private, political and social connotations. Creators, imagineers and explorers of big data, augmented reality, data aesthetics, generative art, audio/visual collage and interactive environments are encouraged to submit works that address the theme of ambience.

                       The Call Out

SCREENGRAB is now entering its fifth year with an international call out for the AUS$5000 New Media Arts Prize and the companion exhibition in July/August 2013 for short listed applicants. We invite digital practitioners working in screen based media to submit works on the theme of AMBIENCE.

All forms of screen based media are encouraged including multi-channel video, digital illustration, audio sculpture, photography, generative media, 2D & 3D animation.

Existing works and those specifically designed for the award must address the theme of AMBIENCE to be eligible for the New Media Arts award.

deadline: 1 July 2013

SFC – Shoah Film Collection is looking for films and videos for its presentations, the next one is taking place at the capital of Lithuania A Virtual Memorial Vilnius 2013 in September/October 2013, standing under the Patronage of the European Parliament.

SFC – Shoah Film Collection
is a wordwide unique initiative by Agricola de Cologne, director of Cologne Art & Moving Images Awards addressed to the young generations of artists and film makers to use new technologies and contemporary approaches in art in order to senstize the visitors/audience to keep vivid the memory of SHOAH.

Launched on occasion of 65th return of the Liberation of the Concentration Camp of Auschwitz on 27 January 2010 SFC – Shoah Film Collection has meanwhile collected 37 outstanding pieces of videoart. Each year, on 27 January, SFC – Shoah Film Collection is releasing a new call for submissions , and now it is so far to invite again artists from the field of “moving images” to submit experimental art films and videoart reflecting the topic of “SHOAH” and related fields.

In 2012, SFC – Shoah Film Collection became the starting point and basis of CTF – Collective Trauma Film Collections – http://ctf.engad.org

Also in 2012, a special event structure has been created, i.e. A Virtual Memorial – Commemorative Interventions” – for placing SFC – Shoah Film Collection in the context of complementary interventions like lectures, a symposion, exhibitions, discussion, artists talks and much more, in order to activate the artists and film makers, as well as the audience. In 2012 already the first three events took place
A Virtual Memorial Riga 2013 –
http://riga2012.a-virtual-memorial.org
A Virtual Memorial Phnom Penh 2012
http://phnompenh2012.a-virtual-memorial.org
A Virtual Memorial Warsaw 2012
http://warsaw2012.a-virtual-memorial.org

In this initiative, the topic of “SHOAH” can be understood as a metaphore for the dark side of human existence causing the most extreme violations of human rights and human dignity, as they are manifesting themselves in the process of the historical HOLOCAUST during the Nazi era in the 20th century, but also in the genocides and crimes against humanity as they are happening nowadays before our very eyes or in our neighbor’s garden.

Understanding as a witness what is happening these days, offers the possibility to understand the inimaginable which the historical HOLOCAUST is representing.

Reflecting the massacre of Srerbrenica, the genocide in Rwanda, Cambodia or Guatemala, the repressions in Tibet or the xenophobic behaviour of your neighbor or probably your own intolerance, is helping to understand the PAST, the PRESENT and FUTURE:
SHOAH must not happen again ever anywhere!

The film and video artists who want to submit are encouraged to inform themselves intensively about the subject matter before they submit a film/video in order to find their individual approach which may be historical, as well as most contemporary in different concern. The human dimension makes SHOAH a topic and matter which has the potential to affect all people anywhere on the globe since the values of humanity are vivid and valid as long as human invidividuals are living, no matter from what kind of cultural, ethnic, religious or social background they may come from.

The film/video selected will be included in SFC -Shoah Film Collection and the long-term plannings of its events.

In 2013, will stand under the Patronage of the European Parliament –>

A Virtual Memorial Vilnius 2013 - in Sept/Oct 2013

———————————————————>
Deadline: 21 April 2013

Open Call – Videorover: Season 6

NURTUREart is now accepting video submissions for the sixth season of Videorover. NURTUREart’s dedicated video program, Videorover aims at becoming an ever-expanding forum for new and emerging video artists.

This year Videorover is partnering with the annual Chicago based performance art festival RAPID PULSE to present performance inspired works made for the camera and to be presented on the screen. Expanding the boundaries of what is or can be performance art is one of the many focuses of the festival, as well as questioning ideas on presence, live-ness and mediation. These tropes will be explored through this video screening partnership, and will be screened both in Chicago and New York.

We are looking for works in the spirit of performance as a medium, privileging the body as the vehicle for production. We are not specifically looking for videos which are only serve as performance documentation, but rather works in which the body and the video act as collaborators.

Please read the submission guidelines (linked below) before submitting.

North Tyneside Council Arts Development Service are inviting expressions of interest from creative practitioners for ‘Shimmer’ – a site specific event held over fireworks weekend in November at Whitley Bay seafront. Whilst the programme is predominantly video, lighting and digital projections and installations, it has included outdoor performance elements appropriate to the brief and applications are welcomed from a range of artforms.

Shimmer is now in its third year and has quickly established itself as a fixture in the cultural calendar with a reputation for being innovative and accessible. The challenge is to develop the event for 2013 and whilst the core programme is expected to be similar in scale to previous years, more ambitious proposals of larger scale and budget are encouraged for consideration.

Call For Art – Cell Mates

The Walsh Gallery at Seton Hall University seeks submissions for “Cell Mates,” two distinct group shows that will be on view side by side in adjacent galleries. Curators Jeanne Brasile and Lisbeth Murray will divide the 2,000 sq. ft. gallery in half, creating two separate exhibitions of artwork inspired by cellular forms. The curators seek art that addresses a wide range of topics related to cellular forms to create a discursive exploration into microorganisms and concerns derived from their study.

The goal of the curators is to demonstrate modes of creation inspired by science, in addition to examining how curators using the same narrative framework can come to very different thematic and aesthetic conclusions. While aesthetics are a concern, the curators are particularly interested in how artists incorporate scientific methods into their practice, how artists obscure or pronounce the delineation between artistic and scientific practices, and/or how artists visualize scientific data to create works of art, placing the artist in the role of quasi-scientist. All types of media are eligible.

Exhibition dates are June 2 – July 18, 2013.
$15/5 entries.
Deadline: Wednesday May 1, 2013 (receipt date)

It is foot-stomping, lung-splitting, booty-shaking.

It’s in your face, your backyard, your neighborhood, your watershed, your continent.

It’s planetary, and it’s right here.

It is direct, but it likes to dance.

It’s exuberant, and it starts with you.

“Exuberant Politics” is issuing a call for film/video programmers, activist archivists, and DIY curators to propose 70-90 minute programs of moving image work featuring exuberant, vivacious, and creative responses to historical and contemporary political issues.

Proposed programs could map a historical arc or be based around specific topics, like “exuberant pacifism,” or “rocking reproductive righteousness.” We are particularly interested in proposals that combine projects by politically-engaged artists’ with creative activism undertaken by people who do not identify as artists. Programs may include performance or protest actions documented by video, as well as work taking film/video as its primary medium.

A total of three programs will be selected to screen at the University of Iowa in Fall 2013, with potential for additional screenings to be arranged in consultation with programmers and artists. Selected programmers will receive a $250 honorarium and up to $400 for screening fees.

“Exuberant Politics” is a yearlong series of programs organized by University of Iowa faculty and Iowa City artists and arts organizations. The “Exuberant Politics” film series is funded by the University of Iowa Museum of Art.

Proposals should include a 250 word description of the program, a tentative list of works (with short synopses and runtimes), and a 250 word narrative bio of the programmer. Send to exuberantpolitics@gmail.com by April 21, 2013. Submissions will be reviewed, selected, and notified by May 5.
