Deadline: 7 November 2010

2nd Digital, Electronic and Media art Encounter
Theme: Art Fair
December 2010 - Le Vigan/France

Call for participation
Art Fair
2nd Digital, Electronic and Media art Encounter
Last year Oudeis launched its first Digital, Electronic and Media art Encounter under the title « Trapped in Freedom ».

It was a one week event spred in three different places : the Espace Lucie Aubrac, le Château d’Assas and le P’tit Comptoir. Videos, installations and an ephemeral editing workshop invited the public to confront the frames of freedom through an artistic point if view.

Oudeis invites again artists and publics to the Digital, Electronic and Media art Encounter, entitled this year « Art Fair ». This event will be held early december.

One can imagine anything of the word « fair » : a huge mess, an amount of goods, a bazaar, noisy, croudy, filled with animations, but also a a festival, games and some slacking. A fair is popular, generous and excessive, it has the taste of the unordinary and the exception. Fairs are filled with airy-fairy demonstrations, inventions, turning them into continuous shows.

Fair is where to demonstrate savoir-faire, unawared or uncommon practices. Stall-holders are actors but also director of their own scenograpy, they are instigators of a magic which embraces the public. Somewhat charlatans, they offer as a promise dream and ephemerity, futility and worthlessness. A promise which longs only a fair’s time.
Art also has its grand fairs : Paris FIAC, Art Basel, Lille Art Fair, Art Brussels, etc. Art in fair ? For lay persons, the idea may seem odd. If arts & crafts fairs are popular, one can wonder what visitors seek in art fairs ? Are works of art bought at the corner of a candyfloss stand ?

If we consider the idea of fair as entertainment and consumption, what could be the function of art fairs ?
These fairs are made for galeries to present their artists and to outline the tendances of art industry, the same it works for the motor industries and their shows for future visitors’s investment.
Art fairs are no ordinary exhibitions. If the public make a rush for it, it is for the compactness of art works, if the purchasers make a rush for it, it is for the compactness of the market.

ART FAIR, is an event which doesn’t deal with a market value but with wonderment of games, arcades and other play innovations, above all NOT innocent. An art to deal with a singular industry.
ART FAIR will also be a moment to unravel the smog around art. It will work as a counter measure, kinda a magic trick to permeabilizes the border between art as a system and publics. And if a fair can be a celebration to sell dream, it also can be brutal, durty, vulgar, direct. ART FAIR will be a moment to clear up the waking drean of art, to explain its system and then to discuss the artist conditions of living : this stall-holder whose work is only a part of his own staging.

Call for participation :

3 Feb - 12 March 2011

Narrative / Identity - Open Call for group exhibition

Focusing on experimental, installation, and new media work, AC seeks submissions from contemporary artists, and others, working in any medium. Artists are encouraged to submit work either already existing or as-yet unrealized that addresses the interlocking questions of narrative and identity; either at the level of social practice, contemporary representation, or both.
Email submissions should be sent to submissions@artcurrents.org by Sept. 15th, 2010. Please include the following in the body of your message (not as attachments):

-A short description and/or images of the work you are proposing for our spaces

-Your standard CV and contact information

-Links to your website or other sites where materials could be viewed, if possible

For the first group show of 2011, February 3 – March 12, curated by Nicole Bebout and Sonja Hofstetter, The AC Institute seeks to investigate the ways in which narrative is used by contemporary artists to construct or demolish our ideas of self and other. Whether through guerrilla-like disruption, ambiguity or fantasy inspired story-telling, we are seeking artists who see narrative as essential to their artistic identity.

Visual artists, VJs, Video artists, sound producers, audio live acts, DJs, multimedia artists, theorists, and technicians are invited to participate at Sonica 2010.

This year, Sonica will take place in October. Sonica is conceived as a showcase of the yearly program of MoTA Museum of Transitory Art.
With the theme real virtuality, Sonica will start a discussion regarding the situation of production, representation and funding. To which extent has the break of virtuality into reality influenced conditions of production, representation of artworks and artists and how does it change funding matrixes will be the topics addressed at MoTA Sea Station residency in the summer, during production residencies in Ljubljana and at the festival with at the exhibition, the round tables and artist talks. But most importantly, Sonica will question how have these transitions affected the content of art produced in the past years and which alternative models are introduced by artists and cultural workers.

Each of the invited artists will participate in at least two of the modules:

exhibition/ performance, round table, artist talk/ production/ residency.

BABELGUM LAUNCHES ANIMATRON FILM FESTIVAL, THE FIRST TRI-PLATFORM GLOBAL VIEWING AND VOTING ANIMATION COMPETITION, WITH CALL FOR ENTRIES

International Jury to Award Cash Prizes
in Five Categories at Hamptons International Film Festival

Short-Film Submissions Begin August 2 and Run Through August 22

New York / London (August 2, 2010) Digital broadcast network Babelgum announced today the first tri-platform (online, mobile and offline) competition for animation and anime, the Babelgum Animatron Film Festival. The competition will culminate in a special public screening program, The Hamptons Animation Showcase, at the 2010 Hamptons International Film Festival (HIFF) in October. Entries will be eligible for an Audience Award voted on by the public as well as cash prizes from a select jury of leaders in the animation, film, and television world, including RotoScope pioneer Tommy Pallotta (Snack and Drink, Waking Life, A Scanner Darkly), industry leader and visual-effects producer Charlotte Bavasso (Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, Nexus Productions), and animators Pete Bishop (Bromwell High, Captain Star) and Isaac Littlejohn Eddy (Anatomy of a Dog Show, Capturing King), and Jeffrey Scher (Paper View, Lost and Found, Tulips), with others to be announced soon.

The submission period begins Monday, August 2, 2010 and continues through Sunday, August 22. Submissions will be available for global viewing at www.babelgum.com/animatron and on the free Babelgum mobile apps in mid September. Votes for the audience award can be placed online or via the mobile apps. Attendees at the Hamptons International Film Festival will also have a chance to cast votes for the Audience Awards, which will be tabulated together with online/mobile audience votes.

Building on this initiative, the Hamptons International Film Festival has partnered with Babelgum to co-present the Hamptons Animation Showcase, an eclectic animated shorts program at the 2010 Hamptons Film Festival, with additional support on marketing and media visibility for the Animatron Film Festival from Shooting People, the social network for independent filmmakers, and RingTales, a company that specializes in animating syndicated comic strips (Dilbert, The New Yorker). Juried by some of the biggest names in animation, with entries from around the globe, the Hamptons Animation Showcase screenings are scheduled to include select winners of the Animatron Jury Awards in five categories (Humor, Fantasy, Real Life, Anime and Minis). Following the initial screening, Babelgum and HIFF will hold an hour-long symposium on “The Future of Animation” at the Festival, featuring panelists from major studios and television networks, leading filmmakers, and some of the pioneers of an
imation.

Karol Martesko-Fenster, SVP & General Manager of Babelgum’s Film Division, stated, “The Animatron Film Festival is an exciting new event for the animation community, and the popularity of animation and anime among both domestic and international audiences makes the Hamptons International Film Festival environment an ideal live venue for our cross-platform competition, which will be freely accessed, viewed, and voted on by anyone in the world. Babelgum is already home to all kinds of ingenious, professionally produced animation, and in the months ahead, we’ll be striving increasingly to become the leading distributor of short animated films and serials on the Web and on mobile devices.”

“As a producer of animated films for over 20 years,” said RingTales co-founder Jim Cox, “I’m thrilled to be working with Babelgum on this exciting online and offline event, a long overdue showcase for the abundant talents of professional and budding animators hailing from around the world. The box-office success of feature films like Shrek and Toy Story 3 certainly underscores the mainstream appeal of studio features, but there’s a whole universe of brilliant, trailblazing filmmakers out there whose animated shorts are just waiting to be discovered.”

From London, James Mullighan, Creative Director at Shooting People,
said: “This festival promises to be great fun, not only for our members, among whom we count thousands of accomplished animators, but for anyone with a passion for animation or an interest in expanding the horizons of what great short filmmaking is all about. It was a pleasure to join forces with Babelgum on previous online competitions, so we look forward to reaching out again to our 35,000-plus member network for quality submissions.”

Eligible films will incorporate any known animation technique, including CGI, stop-motion, Flash, hand-drawn/cel, live-action mixed, claymation, paper-cut, Pixilation, RotoScope, 3D, machinima, and all others. There are no restrictions on production year or whether the film has been previously distributed or entered into any online and/or offline film festival. The award categories are as follows:

· HUMOR: Cartoons/animation that look at life slightly askew
· FANTASY: Sci-fi, horror, adventure, outer space, imaginary worlds, genre-based
· REAL LIFE: Animated documentary, RotoScope, interview-based films
· ANIME: Manga, Japanimation, comics-inspired
· MINIS: Under 60 seconds

The Babelgum Animatron Film Festival will award the following prizes:

. The Audience Awards will be given to an outstanding film in each category receiving the highest number of votes determined solely by the voting totals from the global online and mobile Babelgum and Hamptons audiences.

. The Jury Awards will be given to an outstanding film in each of the five categories, determined by members of the Jury. Five first-place winners will receive a $2,500 cash award and five second-place winners will receive a $500 cash award.

. The Grand Jury Award will be given to an outstanding film in any category, chosen by members of the Jury. The winner will receive a $5,000 cash award.

Submissions will be accepted starting today until 11:59 PM EST on August 22nd, 2010. Further information about the submission specifications and regulations, including deadlines for viewing and voting, are available at www.babelgum.com/animation-film-festival
We are unable to accept deliveries which do not have the full postage required.

JURY CRITERIA
As the festival is open for productions of different kind, works have to be judged that often can hardly be compared. This problem would not be solved by establishing categories (like “animition” or “political”), as many videos would belong to more then one of these.
Therefore the jury decided to define “focal points”. They are not exclusive, and the jury will look in each case at the other aspects too. But they give the chance to determine the juries’ main focus for each work. So one of these focal points MUST be named by the author for his work:
– visual experience
– social, political or ethical statement
– narrative process
– coherence between the visual and auditive part
– conceptual aspect (i.e. integration in art discourses)

The jury will applicate these criteria in judging the videos:
Originality of idea or concept
Sense for composition and sense for rhythm
Quality of the narration (if there is a narrative dimension in the work)
Adequacy of time and effort in production and technique and relationship between production quality and intention: Neither a low effort nor a low production quality are generally negative, if they are handled in a conscious way or if they are conceptually not important to a work. On the other hand of course high quality can be important if the work’s concept needs them. But perfection alone doesn’t impress us.
Utilization of time (only for the OneMinutes): how precise has been worked with this short time span?

http://www.dokweb.net/en/east-european-forum/entry-form/

East European Forum 2010

- This year the Forum celebrates its 10th anniversary! For the whole decade it has been the region’s largest meeting of East European documentary filmmakers and leading European commissioning editors, distributors, buyers and film fund representatives. Directors and independent producers offer their projects for co-production, pre-sales or any other form of financial support. To this date, some 60 documentary films have been made with the support of the Forum.

- Newly, we will introduce Feedback Round Tables after project presentations. Designed to enhance the positive and focused feedback from commissioners, they also offer an exceptional networking opportunity for the participants with a much smaller group of broadcasters in a more intimate setting. Each project will get up to five times more space for discussion compared to the traditional pitch format. In addition, after the Feedback Round Tables, the filmmaking teams can also engage in in-depth, one-on-one meetings with broadcasters based on comments received at the round tables.

- Projects Presentations will be delivered prior to the feedback round tables to a large group of visitors and approx. 25 broadcasters representing companies from around Europe and North America, including MDR/ARD, Channel 4, BBC, ARTE, POV, ITVS, ORF and many others. Doc Presentations will provide a relaxed and flexible environment for the participants, with more time available for each project.

——————————————————————

During its existence, the Forum has become a prestigious meeting place that has, since 2001, hosted 510 East European filmmakers and producers, over 60 TV commissioning editors and dozens of international distributors, buyers and festival programmers.

The workshop, sidebar programme and public presentations will be attended by more than 120 documentary professionals.

WHO IS IT FOR?
Directors and producers with their own creative projects. Participants must be proficient in English. All parts of the programme must be attended by both the director and the producer. The East European Forum focuses mainly on Central and East European creative documentary projects, with the director and/or producer based in the region.

PARTICIPATION FEE:
€ 100/selected project + € 250 contribution for accommodation per project

Deadline: 3 September 2010

Dome Lab 2010
Presented by the Australian Network for Art & Technology (ANAT)
31 October - 5 November 2010 :: Perth, Australia.

WHAT
The emergence of destination cinema and the proliferation of large-format
screens in public spaces present a challenge - and opportunity - to
filmmakers and artists working in more traditional screen formats. At the
very least a new cinematic language is required, one taking account of the
audience’s very different experience of stories presented on “frameless”
screens. Fulldome, with its hemispherical screens and surround-sound, is an accessible and powerful test-bed enabling filmmakers and artists to
experiment with and develop this new language.

WHY
Reflecting its provenance, most fulldome content to date has been
educational and comprised of computer-generated animation, data
visualistion, or a combination of both. Now, however, there is a shifting
focus, with producers turning their sights to the entertainment potential of
live-action story-telling for large-formats such as fulldome.

Dome Lab is a world-leading intensive workshop investigating this potential and the specific challenges involved in creating compelling live-action narrative content for large format and frameless screens.

WHO
Filmmakers and artists excited by the chance to leap beyond the frame and
into the expansive creative potential of large-format, immersive screen
experiences are invited to apply. Participants will work alongside a team of
creative and technical luminaries including Academy-Award winner, Ben Shedd, 2010 Peter Rasmussen award-winner, Peter Morse and international fulldome pioneer, Hue Walker Bumgarner-Kirby.

Applicants must have a minimum of three years professional experience in
their field (except for SDA Subsidy applicants - see guidelines). Selection
will be based on skill-set, with a view to putting together four to five
small production teams. Accordingly, applicants from the full production
chain, including writers, directors, camera and audio operators, editors,
and designers are encouraged to apply.

HOW
Deadline for applications is 5pm CST, Friday 3 September 2010.

Deadline: 1 November 2010

“Ghost-hunters”A project by Sarah Sparkes and Ricarda Vidal

17th December 2010, 6 - 10pm at St Johns Church on Bethnal Green
200 Cambridge Heath Road, London E2 9PA

We are inviting submissions of artist films on the theme of ‘Ghost hunters’. We welcome short films, but will consider films of up to 20 minutes in duration. Films should be suitable for screening as part of a show reel, rather than for installation. The works will be screened on a big screen in the nave of the church of St John Bethnal Green as part of “GHost III”, an annual weekend-long exhibition with performances and screenings.

We are interested in moving image works which explore the various angles and aspects of ghost-hunting.

“HAUNTED HOUSE: Responsible persons of leisure and intelligence, intrepid, critical, and unbiased, are invited to join rota of observers in a years night and day investigation of alleged haunted house in Home counties. Printed Instructions supplied. Scientific training or ability to operate simple instruments an advantage. House situated in lonely hamlet, so own car is essential. Write Box H.989, The Times, E.C.4″

This ad appeared on 25 May 1937 in The Times. It was posted by Harry Price, an early-20th-century ghost-hunter who was looking for fellow researchers to investigate the paranormal activities in Borley Rectory, allegedly Britain’s ‘most haunted house’. While it is unlikely that a similar ad would be taken seriously by most readers of The Times these days, TV-shows such as ‘Britain’s Most Haunted’, or cinema films like The Blair Witch Project (1999) or Paranormal Activity (2010) as well as the abundance of websites dedicated to the paranormal attest to the continuing interest in the field. In some sense ghost-hunting has become popular entertainment, but its popularity is also an expression of a need to prove the existence of life beyond death.

Deadline for submissions: 1st November 2010
Please send submissions to:

The Kuala Lumpur Experimental Film and Video Festival (KLEX) aims at introducing both historical and contemporary experimental cinema to the Malaysian audience, nurturing the experimental film and videomakers in the region, and developing experimental cinema communities in Malaysia. KLEX will be a venue for a discourse on critical issues related to the edge of cinema art. Although experimental cinema is more recognized by the general public in some countries as a genre, we would like to ask the Malaysian audience a question: What would be experimental cinema in Malaysia and is there a chance for development of this genre in Malaysia?

Pierre Cornette de Saint-Cyr presides over the New Media Arts Jury this year. It is composed by 6 to 8 new media professionals: curators, festival directors, journalists, critics, auctioneers.
Deadline: 13 August 2010

Project proposals and portfolios for the exhibition program at
KUNSTPAVILLON and NEUE GALERIE of the Tiroler Künstlerschaft in
Innsbruck for the 2011 program

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION: August 13, 2010 (date of postmark)

The entire call can be found here:
http://kuenstlerschaft.at/kue/modules.php?op=modload&name=PagEd&file=index&topic_id=18&page_id=746&newlang=eng

The Tyrolean Artists’ Association is conceived of as a forum for art in
Tyrol, as an interface between professional visual artists living in or
originating from Tyrol, the interested public, and other cultural
institutions in and outside of Austria. An important task for the
Association is forming and maintaining contacts to internationally
active artists, curators and theoreticians.

The exhibition programs of the KUNSTPAVILLON and the Stadtturmgalerie
presented projects by Tyrolean artists in relation to an international
context. The Stadtturmgalerie is moving into the Hofburg at the
beginning of 2011, where, as the NEUE GALERIE, it will offer more space
for artistic projects in the exciting historical complex of buildings.
The emphasis for the Kunstpavillon and Neue Galerie programme is placed
on presenting artistic production with a relationship to Tyrol.
Exhibitions by external curators and artists from abroad and other
Austrian federal states are important points of engagement and offer
exciting surfaces for friction.

The programs for the Kunstpavillon and the Neue Galerie are put together
by a jury of arts professionals primarily from submissions received in
response to an open call. The call is sent to members of the association
as well as to national and international artists and curators. The jury
of professionals is made up of members of the board of the association
along with external experts.

More information on current and past exhibition programs of the
Künstlerschaft can be found at www.kuenstlerschaft.at. Five exhibitions
in the Kunstpavillon and five in the Neue Galerie are intended for 2011.

The Biennial of light art Austria 2010 is an exhibition of contemporary art dealing with light and is inaugurated in 2010.

General information

The slogan of the „ Biennale für Lichtkunst Austria 2010“ is „private light in public spaces“ and takes place in Austria within the project “LALA”. LALA means Linz (Austria) and Langenzersdorf (Austria), where the two initiators have their ateliers. Linz was the cultural capital of Austria in 2009, and the city is established in the cultural landscape by the Museum Lentos, the Ars Electronca Center and the Brucknerhaus. Langenezersdorf , a township close to Vienna, has two museums for famous Austrian sculptors, the Hanak-Museum and the Charoux-Museum. On April 13th 2010 the National Biennale of light art starts by presenting artwork in public spaces.

Artists from all over the world are invited to show their light projects in streets, squares and public buildings, trying to empathise with the places and the people who frequent them or simply work there. Already completed artwork is shown as well as artwork especially created for the Biennale. The keywords are light-art, public and private, which build the
triangle of eagerness.

The organisation team of the „Biennale für Lichtkunst Austria 2010“ is led by Martina Schettina from Langenzersdorf and Manfred Kielnhofer from Linz.

Exhibition spaces

The public exhibition spaces are selected by the artists themselves. There is no border and no limit, so every artist has the greatest possible freedom of action. The reaction of the public will be different, because they are rapidly transformed into a captive audience. The public may come with no prior art experience, alternatively with much education.

Concept

This first Biennial for Light Art in Austria wants to generate a cut surface between society and art. The spontaneous conjunction with art in public spaces leans on the art concept of Joseph Beuys from 1965 “How to define the paintings to the dead rabbit” in Düsseldorf.

A dialogue should arise between art and the public.

Artists

Among the selected artists will be light artists as well as artists, who use light in art for the first time. The use of light will transform art to a higher level.

Sponsoring

The Biennial is sponsored by Austria, its cities and towns, which provide the artists with public squares, streets and buildings free of charge. More sponsors are welcome.

Send submissions to the e-mail address below.

Deadline: 01/09/10

Deadline: 7 November 2010

VIDA 13.0
Art & Artificial Life International Competition
Fundación Telefónica Madrid/Spain

At a time when the notion of life is once again located in an uncertain domain, a wide range of artistic initiatives come together to illustrate and investigate this phenomenon; they examine the impact on the collective conscience and the way it is manifested in cultural, technological and social thought.

Over the last decade, in the same formal space, VIDA has been bringing together inter-disciplinary projects that respond to this situation. By means of formal strategies that defy the boundaries between existing practices, these projects offer new ways of reflecting on what we understand by life and artificial life.

Fundación Telefónica announces the VIDA 13.0 Art & Artificial Life International Competition, which for the last twelve years has awarded prizes for artistic projects using technological mediums offering innovative approaches to research into artificial life.

The projects may be based on systems which emulate, imitate or speculate on the notion of life through current research and technology. These systems may involve attributes of agency and autonomy which display specific behaviour, are dynamic, react to their surroundings and evolve, and which question the frontiers between what is alive and what is not, between synthetic and organic life.

As in previous years there are two categories to the competition:
FINISHED PROJECTS

In this category VIDA 13.0 will award prizes to artistic ALife projects developed after 2008. The sum of 40,000 Euros will be shared between the projects selected by the jury: First Prize: 18,000 Euros, Second Prize: 14,000 Euros, and Third Prize: 8,000 Euros. In addition seven honourable mentions will be awarded.
ARTISTIC PRODUCTION INCENTIVES IN IBEROAMERICA, SPAIN AND PORTUGAL

In this category VIDA 13.0 helps to fund artistic ALife projects that have not yet been produced. This is aimed at citizens or residents of countries comprising Latin America, Spain and Portugal. The sum of 40,000 Euros will be shared between the selected projects.
The winning projects will be subsequently exhibited at the VIDA Gallery,

http://www.fundacion.telefonica.com/arteytecnologia/galeriavida/.
and may be presented in exhibitions related to art and new technologies organised by Fundación Telefónica or in which it takes part.

DATES

Period for submission of projects: from 19th July to 7th November 2010.
JURY

The works submitted will be examined by an international panel composed of José-Carlos Mariátegui (Peru), Mónica Bello Bugallo (Spain), Nell Tenhaaf (Canada) Rodrigo Alonso (Argentina), Simon Penny (USA/Australia), Zhan Ga (China) and Francisco Serrano (General Director of Fundación Telefónica).
ENQUIRIES

Queries may be addressed to the FAQs section of the website, by e-mail to vida@telefonica.es or by calling (0034) 91 584 23 00.
