Deadline: 1 March 2010

Ms.Use

The second issue of Ms.Use offers a platform to rethink the concept of ‘ecology’ and its links to sexuality. The term ‘ecology’ was first introduced in the nineteenth century and marked a new scientific field: nature and the relationships between organism and its surroundings.

http://www.msuse.com/

The word ‘eco’ originated from the Greek word Oikos (home). Paradoxically, popular culture and scientific investigation has, over the years, forged a gap between what is ‘natural’ and organic in human sexuality, and that which is ‘cultivated.’ The common assumption being that ecology is part of a natural process of which human beings are merely spectators.

And yet, how does the sphere of human sexuality communicate with questions of ecology? Is sexuality a natural or a cultural phenomenon? What kind of relations balance, use and exploit the various expressions of sexuality all around us? How does the media, the law, politics, technology and the pool of images circulating in these forms, influence our understanding of these relations? Eco-sex alludes, among others, to the relations between the environment and capitalism, globalization, and the western sex industry – in their terms, products and institutions. Satisfying ones’ ‘natural’ sexual needs in the West involves exploiting ‘nature’ and making it a commodity, such as women in the underprivileged third world countries in the far east who become sex slaves, weak populations in the West (immigrants, women, children), as well as natural resources.

What kind of news or renewed promise for the future can arise from rethinking the ties between ecology, nature, culture and sexuality?
organic sex | solar sex | sterility | one night stands | disposable sex | recycled sex | sex trash | clean sex | natural sex | sex in nature | newage sex | fuck and chuck | the modern and unnatural human trafficking which leads to unnatural sex | sexuality as animalistic | natural surroundings for sex | sex tourism (‘romantic’ cities like Paris) | sex pollution | extinct sex | sex and natural disasters | sex as a natural resource | exoticism | medical sex | pick up | sex on the move | migrating sex | drug induced sexuality | microscopic sex | hybrid sex | demographic sex | purebred sex | refined sex

Submission deadline
01/03/2010

Submissions should be sent to
submit@msuse.com

Specify on submited work:
- Name of creator/writer
- Contact details: Email, Phone Number
Deadline: 5 March 2010

For the 2010 exhibition

The cybernetic invasion and computers have aggressively rendered daily life and relationships impotent. The exhibition “iEmotions-Means of Emotions” will explore how the consistent access to the internet in the western world has sythesized emotions. The selected work for this exhibition will critique the cybernetic myth about the emancipated access of useful information, and the fairy tale of global networking and sharing. It will attempt to demystify the democratic political claim of the cybernetic thesis and to take a closer look at how we define, perceive and describe emotions now in a post-TV world. The selected work will be featured in the final exhibition at apexart in New York City from May 26 to June 5, 2010.

This open call welcomes proposals from all artists. Collaborations will be reviewed by the same standards as individual entries. International artists are welcome to apply.

The festival of Les Instants Vidéo is an event dedicated to electronic and media arts.

The 23rd edition is at the moment in preparation: ” There are mixed countries, where the species mix, where roads are uncertain, where mountains suddenly flatten and rivers take the taste of the sea water. It is generally places of passage, between two landscapes of happiness or between two shadows which suddenly find their light. ”

Every year we present international programs of video art and experimental documentaries, video installations, artists’ CD-ROM, performances, poets, conferences and public debates…

You will find an entry form on our site: www.instantsvideo.com/inscriptions.html
